We are surrounded by powerful programmable devices with communication interfaces, yet we are not using them nearly as much as we could — we are not even close to getting the full value out of them. Being connected to friends anywhere on the planet, tapping into humankind’s accumulated knowledge, playing games, or streaming videos are all great achievements. But as long as all data flow via the servers of a few huge service providers we will be held back by a lack of dependability. There is no reason why an electronic door lock should have an internet connection, it suffices that it can communicate with my smartphone; such a lock continues to function while my DSL connection is down or the when the door-lock-as-a-service provider closes shop. There is a whole new field of applications that become tractable when switching to a local-first view, and Edge Native is the logical conclusion of this train of thought. This presentation dives head-first into the topic, applying the Reactive principles with some examples from bringing modern IT onto the factory shop-floor.
